Phantom Blade Zero Wiki

The definitive guide to weapons, combat, bosses, and the Sha-Chi system

Oct 29, 2026 PS5 & PC Action RPG

Overview

Phantom Blade Zero is a fast-paced wuxia action RPG developed and published by S-GAME, built on Unreal Engine 5. You play as Soul, an elite assassin of The Order who is framed for the murder of the organization's patriarch. Gravely wounded and given only 66 days to live by a mystic healer, Soul must unravel a world-ending conspiracy while mastering a unique Sha-Chi combat system that blends aggressive offense with precise defensive maneuvers.

Set in the Phantom World — a kungfupunk universe fusing Chinese martial arts with steampunk and cyberpunk aesthetics — the game features a semi-open world, 30+ primary weapons, 20+ Phantom Edge secondary weapons, eight distinct endings, and four adjustable difficulty modes. No prior knowledge of the Phantom Blade or Rainblood series is required.

Key Features

  • Sha-Chi resource system powering both offense and defense
  • 30+ primary blades and 20+ Phantom Edge secondary weapons
  • Semi-open world with non-linear exploration paths
  • 8 endings driven by side quests and item collection
  • 4 difficulty modes from Story to Sha-Chi Master
  • New Game Plus, Boss Rush, and co-op dungeon modes

Series Background

Phantom Blade Zero is a spiritual rebirth of the original Rainblood games. The release was originally announced as September 9, 2026 at The Game Awards 2025, but S-GAME delayed the game by approximately 50 days following the June 2026 State of Play to polish critical areas.

Combat System

Combat in Phantom Blade Zero revolves around the Sha-Chi resource — a dual-purpose energy gauge that fuels your offense and enables your defense. Mastering Sha-Chi management is the single most important skill for success.

Sha-Chi System

Sha-Chi is consumed by heavy attacks, Phantom Edge abilities, blocking Brutal Moves, and Power Surge ultimates. You build Sha-Chi by landing basic attacks, perfect parries, and Ghoststep counters. Fast weapons (Dual Blades, Sword) generate Sha-Chi faster than slow weapons (Greatsword, Arm Cannon). Switching primary weapons fully restores your Sha-Chi gauge.

How to Build Sha-Chi

  • Land basic attack combos — each hit adds Sha-Chi
  • Perfect parry a Brutal Move — grants 2 bars plus increased generation rate
  • Ghoststep through a Killer Move — grants 1 bar plus damage buff on next attack
  • Switch primary weapons — fully restores Sha-Chi

How to Spend Sha-Chi

  • Heavy attacks and Sha-Chi combos
  • Phantom Edge secondary weapon abilities
  • Blocking Brutal Moves (drains heavily if not parried)
  • Power Surge ultimate (requires full Essence meter)

Brutal Moves vs Killer Moves

Enemy attacks are color-coded to tell you how to respond. Brutal Moves flash blue — they can be parried with L1/Q for a Ghoststep reposition behind the enemy. Blocking without parrying drains significant Sha-Chi. Killer Moves flash red — they cannot be blocked or parried. You must Ghoststep (R1/E) through them at the last moment to teleport behind the attacker and open a counter window.

Ghoststep & Parry

Ghoststep is Phantom Blade Zero's signature defensive mechanic. Successfully parrying a Brutal Move or dodging through a Killer Move teleports Soul behind the enemy, building Sha-Chi Essence and creating an opening for a backstab combo. On Sha-Chi Master difficulty, Brutal Move parry windows are 30% tighter, requiring frame-perfect timing against late-game bosses.

Power Surge

When your Sha-Chi Essence meter is full, activate Power Surge to unleash your equipped weapon's ultimate ability. Each weapon type has a unique Power Surge: Sword delivers a multi-hit slash combo, Greatsword triggers Earth Splitter shockwave, Dual Blades perform a multi-target dancing strike, Spear executes a wide arc sweep, and Arm Cannon fires a devastating barrage.

Weapons & Builds

Soul carries two primary weapons and two Phantom Edge secondary weapons simultaneously, switching freely mid-combat. With 30+ primary blades and 20+ Phantom Edges, each weapon features its own skill tree, upgrade path, evolution system, and unique Power Surge.

Weapon Types

TypeSpeedSha-ChiStyle
SwordFastMediumBalanced all-rounder
Dual BladesVery FastFastAggressive rushdown
GreatswordSlowSlowHeavy damage, high risk
SpearMediumMediumRange and control
Arm CannonMediumSlowRanged hybrid

Dual Weapon System

Press D-Pad Left (PS5) or 1/2 (PC) to switch primary weapons mid-combo. Switching fully restores Sha-Chi, making weapon swaps a core combat strategy. Pair fast and slow weapons to adapt to different enemy types.

Phantom Edges

Phantom Edges are secondary weapons ranging from cannons and lances to axes, hammers, and throwing weapons. They consume Sha-Chi on activation and provide ranged or utility options. Experiment with combinations that complement your primary weapon's weaknesses.

Build Archetypes (Pre-Launch)

aggressive Build

Weapons: Dual Blades + Sword

Phantom Edge: Throwing Daggers

Focus: Maximize Sha-Chi generation through fast combos

Playstyle: Rush in, build Sha-Chi quickly, unleash Power Surge often

defensive Build

Weapons: Spear + Greatsword

Phantom Edge: Shield

Focus: Perfect parries and Ghoststep counters

Playstyle: Wait for Brutal Moves, parry for bonus Sha-Chi, counter with heavy hits

hybrid Build

Weapons: Sword + Arm Cannon

Phantom Edge: Lance

Focus: Flexible offense at all ranges

Playstyle: Switch weapons mid-combo, adapt to enemy patterns

Difficulty

Phantom Blade Zero offers four difficulty modes that can be changed at any time. Higher difficulties alter enemy AI, attack patterns, parry windows, and reward multipliers — not just stat scaling.

Difficulty Comparison

Mode Enemy Damage Enemy Health AI Changes Reward Bonus
Story Mode 0.6x 0.7x Telegraphed attacks, slower combos 0.8x XP/Materials
Standard 1.0x 1.0x Normal attack patterns 1.0x
Hard 1.5x 1.3x Faster combos, new attack strings 1.5x
Sha-Chi Master 2.0x 1.5x Full moveset, reduced parry windows 2.5x

Recommended Approach

Start your first playthrough on Standard to learn enemy patterns and Sha-Chi mechanics. Switch to Hard in the final region for increased material drops. Attempt Sha-Chi Master only after fully upgrading at least one weapon and consistently executing Ghoststep counters against Killer Moves.

Bosses

Boss encounters in Phantom Blade Zero feature multi-phase fights with mid-fight checkpoints — if you die in phase 2, you restart at phase 2 rather than replaying phase 1. This quality-of-life feature makes learning patterns less punishing than traditional souls-likes.

Seven Judgments (Demo Boss)

Showcased in the Hellwalker difficulty demo, Seven Judgments is a multi-phase boss that tests your mastery of Brutal Move parries and Killer Move Ghoststeps. On Sha-Chi Master difficulty, this boss gains a fourth phase with additional attack strings and tighter parry windows.

Phase Breakdown

  • Phase 1: Standard melee combos with telegraphed Brutal Moves — learn parry timing here
  • Phase 2: Adds ranged projectiles and faster Killer Move frequency — prioritize Ghoststep
  • Phase 3: Enrage mode with combo extensions — save Power Surge for this phase
  • Phase 4 (Sha-Chi Master only): New attack patterns requiring frame-perfect parries

General Boss Tips

  • Observe attack color cues: blue = parry, red = Ghoststep
  • Save Power Surge for phase transitions or enrage windows
  • Switch weapons to restore Sha-Chi during safe openings
  • Use mid-fight checkpoints to practice later phases without replaying earlier ones
  • Boss Rush mode (post-campaign) lets you replay all bosses plus hidden exclusive bosses

World & Map

Phantom Blade Zero takes place in a semi-open world where regions are seamlessly connected. Some areas are inaccessible initially but can be reached through non-linear paths — specific weapons acquired later may unlock previously unreachable zones.

Exploration

  • Seamlessly connected regions inspired by Ming dynasty China with kungfupunk elements
  • Multiple paths to each destination — explore to find shortcuts and secrets
  • Weapon-gated areas requiring specific blade types or abilities to access
  • Side quests scattered throughout regions revealing character backstories
  • Hand-painted guiding maps created by Central Academy of Fine Arts artists

Known Regions

Pang Town serves as an early hub area with an unsettling atmosphere reinforced by unique septuple-meter music. Additional regions draw from real-world locations in Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Hebei, and other Chinese provinces. Full region map will be updated at launch.

Endings

Phantom Blade Zero features eight distinct endings — more than Elden Ring's six. Endings are determined not by a final choice menu but by side quest completion, item collection, and story decisions made throughout the campaign.

How Endings Work

Creator Soulframe Liang confirmed that reaching a bad ending is possible if you rush the main story in 20–30 hours without engaging side content. Collectors and completionists unlock more ending branches. At certain story checkpoints, the game performs item checks — possessing specific items before key moments opens different narrative paths.

  • Complete side quests to unlock ending branches
  • Collect key items before story checkpoint moments
  • NPCs and readable clues provide hints about ending requirements
  • Think like Soul would think — guidance is embedded in the narrative
  • New Game Plus allows revisiting choices for alternate endings

Campaign Length

Main story: approximately 20–30 hours. Full completion with all side content and endings: 40–50+ hours. Boss Rush and co-op dungeons add additional endgame content.

Items & Equipment

Equipment progression in Phantom Blade Zero centers on weapon evolution, skill trees, and collectible items that influence both combat power and story outcomes.

Weapon Upgrades

Each primary weapon has its own upgrade and evolution system featuring new skills and move additions. Higher difficulties provide increased material drop rates — Sha-Chi Master offers 2.5x rewards, making it the fastest path to max weapon upgrades on repeat playthroughs.

Skill Tree

A global skill tree complements individual weapon progression. Invest points earned through combat and exploration to unlock passive bonuses, new combat techniques, and utility abilities. Plan your build around your preferred weapon pairings.

Collectibles & Story Items

Certain collectibles directly affect which ending you receive. Prioritize exploration and NPC interactions to gather story-critical items before reaching key narrative checkpoints. A completionist approach is rewarded with the most endings unlocked.

Tier List

A definitive weapon tier list will be published after the October 29, 2026 launch, once all 30+ weapons and 20+ Phantom Edges are available in the full game with complete upgrade paths.

Pre-Launch Assessment

Based on demo footage and developer interviews, no single weapon dominates — each type serves a distinct playstyle. Dual Blades excel at Sha-Chi generation speed, Spears offer superior range and safety, Greatswords deliver highest per-hit damage, and Swords provide the most balanced experience for beginners.

Early Rankings (Subject to Change)

  • S-Tier (Beginner Friendly): Sword — balanced speed, damage, and Sha-Chi generation
  • A-Tier (Aggressive): Dual Blades — fastest combos, highest skill ceiling
  • A-Tier (Defensive): Spear — excellent range, safe poking, strong parry follow-ups
  • B-Tier (High Risk/Reward): Greatsword — devastating but slow, punishing mistakes
  • B-Tier (Hybrid): Arm Cannon — unique ranged options, slower Sha-Chi build

These pre-launch rankings are based on limited demo access. Full tier list with endgame balance will be updated within the first week of launch.
